Two deadlines worth knowing right now. If Social Security has denied your claim, you generally have 60 days from receiving that notice to appeal — miss it and you often have to start over. And because back pay can accrue from your application or onset date, the sooner a claim is filed correctly, the more of that benefit you may preserve. Those are the two clocks that actually matter; most of the rest of the process rewards patience.

SSDI and SSI, in one line each

SSDI (Social Security Disability Insurance) is the benefit you earned by working and paying Social Security taxes; your monthly amount is based on your earnings record. SSI (Supplemental Security Income) is a needs-based program for people with limited income and resources — the 2026 federal benefit rate is $994 a month for an individual and $1,491 for a couple. Either way, Social Security first asks whether you can do “substantial gainful activity,” which in 2026 generally means earning under $1,690 a month ($2,830 if you are blind). Many Arizonans qualify to apply for both programs at once.

What conditions can qualify

There is no single list of “approved” diagnoses. Social Security approves claims based on how your condition limits your ability to work, supported by medical evidence — though it does maintain a catalog of impairments (the “Blue Book”) with specific criteria. Physical conditions like spine and joint disorders, heart and lung disease, and cancer, and mental conditions like depression, anxiety, and PTSD, all regularly support approved claims.
